What is MPEG ?

* MPEG is a compressed form of data for multimedia. You can store Video and Audio with it. It's advantage is, that you only need 10% to 33% of the normally used diskspace to store the same information. It does also have some disadvantages. Because it is compressed, your computer needs to decompress the information while the actual information is used at the same time. This will need more CPU speed and more memory. If you want to use MPEG, you'll need a Pentium(tm) compatible processor, and 8MB or 16MB of memory. The more you have, the better it runs.

What do 'MP3' and 'MPEG-3' stand for ?

* 'MP3' and 'MPEG-3' stand for MPEG Audio Layer 3, a special MPEG-format for playing and distributing songs. In this form, you will be able to compress the audio-information to a maximum of 6½ %. The average compression rate is about 1:10. This means, that you can get 1 minute of music on 1 MB. In the standard 'Wave'-format of Windows this will be 10 MB. On a MP3-CD, you are able to store about 10 hours of music. At full CD quality. This means 44 kHz, 16-bit stereo or surround sound.

To play MP3-files, what software do I need ?

* There are several programs like WinAmp and NAD, which will play this MPEG format. One of the most used MP3-players is WinAmp. This program is written by Nullsoft, and supports besides MPEG-3 also the standard wave-format, MIDI-files, Modules from ScreamTracker, Fasttracker and others, and other multimedia files. You can download it at the WinAmp homepage, which you will find at the 'link' section.

Can I make my own MP3-files ?

* Yes, with Easy MP3 or MP3 Encoder. These are available at MP3.com and some other big sites. MP3.com is available too at the link-section.
